RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s rapid adoption of artificial intelligence is entering a new stage as organizations increasingly focus on turning AI investments and pilot projects into measurable business results.
Businesses across the Kingdom are already using AI in areas including operations, customer experience, risk management and decision-making. The focus is now shifting from simply introducing AI tools to determining how effectively those technologies can be integrated into everyday business processes.
According to the PwC AI Performance Study – KSA edition, 60 percent of respondents reported large or very large improvements in employee productivity, while 53 percent reported significant improvements in their operating models.
However, productivity improvements do not automatically translate into financial returns. Companies are increasingly looking at how they can measure the value generated by AI, identify successful use cases and scale them across their organizations.
Moving beyond AI pilots
Industry experts cited by Arab News say one of the major challenges for Saudi organizations is moving AI projects beyond isolated experiments.
Successful scaling requires more than selecting an AI model or deploying a new software tool. Organizations also need reliable data, appropriate governance, workforce training, changes to operating processes and technology platforms capable of supporting larger deployments.
Deloitte describes this transition as moving from AI experimentation to AI industrialization — taking AI applications that have demonstrated potential in controlled environments and making them reliable enough for broader enterprise use.
Growing interest in agentic AI
This shift is becoming particularly important as organizations begin exploring more advanced AI applications.
AI systems are increasingly being used not only to generate information but also to analyze data, make predictions and recommend actions.
The PwC study found that nearly half of respondents said their most advanced AI deployments can perform these functions. Around 29 percent reported using AI to coordinate multiple tasks within workflows.
Another emerging area is agentic AI, where AI systems can perform multiple steps within a workflow, coordinate actions across different systems and work alongside people toward defined objectives.
Potential applications include procurement, customer service, compliance, human resources, project management and knowledge management.
Governance remains important
Greater AI adoption also increases the importance of cybersecurity, data protection, accountability and human oversight.
Experts have highlighted the need for organizations to incorporate governance into the AI development and deployment process rather than treating it as a separate approval step.
This becomes especially important when AI systems are introduced into critical business operations or are given greater autonomy.
Skills will shape AI adoption
The expansion of AI is also changing the skills businesses need.
Organizations require not only data scientists and AI engineers but also managers and employees who understand how to work with AI, redesign workflows and evaluate the results generated by these systems.
The broader goal is to develop an AI-ready workforce capable of using technology effectively across different parts of an organization.
What comes next for Saudi businesses?
Saudi Arabia has continued to invest in digital infrastructure, technology capabilities and AI talent as part of its broader economic transformation.
Energy, manufacturing, financial services, healthcare, government services, tourism and other sectors offer opportunities for further AI deployment.
The next stage of the Kingdom’s AI development will therefore involve more than increasing the number of AI projects. Businesses will increasingly need to demonstrate how these technologies improve productivity, customer experiences, operations and business models.
For Saudi organizations, the key question is gradually shifting from whether to adopt AI to how effectively they can use it at scale and demonstrate its value.
