US Iran talks are continuing as diplomatic efforts focus on the conflict and the Strait of Hormuz crisis.

Qatari mediators are expected to hold separate discussions with Iranian and U.S. representatives in New York on Monday or Tuesday, according to Reuters.

The talks will focus on an amended version of a seven-day proposal that Iran presented last week during the United Nations General Assembly.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi remains in New York. He is expected to meet Qatari mediators as diplomatic efforts continue.

The discussions could provide a channel for Washington and Tehran to explore a possible path toward ending hostilities.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes.

It connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Large volumes of oil and other energy products move through the waterway.

As a result, any disruption can affect shipping and energy markets.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Brent crude rose sharply on Monday as uncertainty surrounding the negotiations increased. Oil prices later eased as expectations of renewed diplomatic engagement grew.

Qatar has played a role in diplomatic efforts surrounding the wider Middle East crisis.

The country can provide a channel for communication between parties that do not have stable direct relations.

Therefore, the latest discussions in New York could give Iran and the United States another opportunity to communicate through intermediaries.

The immediate question is whether mediators can narrow the differences between Washington and Tehran.

The outcome could have wider regional effects.

For example, developments around the Strait of Hormuz could affect international shipping, energy markets and regional security.

They could also have an impact on businesses and economies across the Gulf.

The US Iran talks will therefore remain closely watched by governments, businesses and energy markets around the world.
